Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Treating Addiction and Mental Disorders with a Proven Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) is probably the most widely used evidence-based practice in the treatment of most addictions. CBT is a very effective tool that we use at Les Mariannes to reshape a person’s maladaptive thinking and behaviour. It is a major element in all our customised treatment programs for addictive behaviour.
How is cognitive behavioural therapy used?
Cognitive behavioural therapy works on modifying the thought patterns of an individual as addiction is very often the result of impulsive behaviour. Addicts tend to act on the feelings that are created by dysfunctional thinking.
The result of dysfunctional thinking is an irrational response to an event based on the individual’s thought process and perception. As an individual tries to manage his emotions or feelings by either diverting or suppressing them, he resorts to substance usage as a way to cope, to feel good.
He becomes a victim of his own mixed up feelings and cannot overcome this situation alone. At Les Mariannes Wellness Sanctuary we encourage our patients to take responsibility for their feelings and emotions and we encourage them to challenge and change their way of thinking. Many of our therapies change the patient’s mind and help them to learn and grow.
One of the miracles of CBT is that it allows patients to focus on themselves and gradually develop analytical tools for taking the best decisions in their life. The CBT is a critical process in overcoming addiction to alter the repeating destructive patterns that is one of the main factors of addictive behaviour.

The Phases of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a therapy applied by trained and practiced counselors. There are six phases of CBT. These are:
- Assessment or psychological assessment
- Reconceptualization
- Skills acquisition
- Skills consolidation and application training
- Generalization and maintenance
- Post-treatment assessment follow-up
A psychologist trained in the therapy of CBT specifically administers each step. It can be delivered in a one-on-one setting or a group setting. This choice at Les Mariannes Wellness Sanctuary is tailored to each patient specifically so the best results can be produced in short order.
Additionally, we only accept 20 patients at a time at our facility so you will never have a sense of crowding or a lack of privacy in any aspect of the program. We know that large groups can impede the success of a patient’s progress and so we strictly enforce this policy in our registration and intake process.
